Protect Our Democracy (POD)

The POD Committee is chaired by Maurie Louis.

The main drive behind the vast majority of the actions performed at the National, State and Local Leagues of Women Voters is to save our democracy.

BACKGROUND

Several pillars hold up and support our democracy, including: the vote, the rule of law, and truthful communications.
A growing wave of actions and communications across the United States are undermining our democracy. These undermining activities take on various forms which include new voter suppression election laws, the spreading of disinformation to fuel the flames of fear that our elections are fraught with fraud, and widespread misinformation posted on social media.

THE POD COMMITTEE

The goals of this committee are to ensure the continuation of our democracy by providing:

  1. education about our democracy, the US Constitution and the importance of upholding the rule of law,
  2. information regarding the integrity and security of our elections,
  3. guidelines to discern between truthful information and misinformation, and
  4. a safe platform for concerned citizens to voice their concerns.

These goals will be accomplished by a series of public community education programs to help our citizens be well informed about our elections and our democracy.

SUBCOMMITTEES & PROGRAMS

Redistricting Reform Subcommittee – Led by Carolyn Burger The mission of the subcommittee is to educate residents about Redistricting at the State, County and local level – what it means, why it matters and how it works. We advocate for defined processes at all levels that promote timely, fair, and effective representation. We support equitable access and maximizing opportunities for participation in our democracy. Rule of Law & the History of the Electoral College Webinar On April 27, 2023, League of Women Voters of Kitsap hosted a webinar featuring Chad Enright, Kitsap County Prosecutor, and Thomas Weaver, attorney and author in a discussion about the rule of law and the history of the Electoral College. These topics are important components of our recent election experiences, and the aftermath of those elections. The evening was a compelling discussion.
